The theme of the graduation ceremony was ‘Celebrating Pioneers’, which was appropriate as the twelve bright and ambitious grade 12 learners who were accepted into the programme in 2008 are the Foundation’s first ever cohort of Scholars to successfully complete and graduate from the Scholarship since its inception.
All 12 Allan Gray Scholars have achieved bachelor’s passes, making them eligible for further studies at university. Anthony Farr, CEO of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation says: “The Scholarship selection process is rigorous and the programme challenging; but these learners have excelled in their studies and faced the challenges presented to them with admirable courage and determination. We are immensely proud of what they have achieved.”
The Scholarship was created to broaden the pool of eligible applicants into the Foundation’s Fellowship. The Scholarship is open to learners who show potential to excel academically, who have the desire to engage in available opportunities as well as those who demonstrate financial need. Scholarship recipients receive comprehensive financial support, and are given access to entrepreneurial and personal development programmes as well as mentorship opportunities to ensure their continued progress.
