In which country does the Foundation provide Scholarships?
The Foundation runs in SADC countries i.e. South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland. High school scholarships for Gr.8 to Gr.12 learners are offered in South Africa and Namibia. Post-Martic scholarships are offered in Botswana and Swaziland. Botswana and Swaziland scholarships are specifically offered to candidates that have applied for the Fellowship and whom require a post matric qualification in order to get access to a South African university.

When do applications close?
Applications for South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland close on different dates. Please go to the How to Apply page of the Scholarship section for more information.
When can I apply for the Scholarship opportunity?
If you are a South African you can only apply when you are in Gr. 6. If you apply in Gr 5 or Gr.7 your application will not be accepted.
If you are a Namibian you can only apply in Gr.7. If you apply any time before Gr.7, your application will not be accepted.
If you are from Botswana or Swaziland, you cannot apply for a full high school scholarship. The Scholarship in these countries are for post matric only. Botswana and Swaziland scholarships are specifically offered to candidates that have applied for the Fellowship and whom require a post matric qualification in order to gain access to a South African university.
Can I apply at anytime during my high school career to become an Allan Gray Scholar?
No, the Allan Gray Scholarship in South Africa and Namibia only selects and supports learners for high school starting in Grade 8, provided they maintain their marks.
The Botswana and Swaziland scholarships are offered to candidates that have applied for the Fellowship and whom require a post matric qualification in order to gain access to a South African university.
Can I choose which school I would like to attend?
The Foundation works with a select group of partner Placement Schools and will only provide funding for learners who chose to attend one of these schools. Please refer to the partner Placement Schools.
Do I have to stay at a boarding house?
There is a strong likelihood of boarding. However each Allan Gray Scholar’s personal circumstances are taken into consideration before recommendations are made.
If I am selected as an Allan Gray Scholar does this mean that after high school I will automatically receive university funding?
No, upon successful graduation from the Allan Gray Scholarship, you will have to follow the standard application process specified for your country to become an Allan Gray Fellow.
Can I lose my Scholarship once I receive it?
Yes, it is possible to lose your Scholarship should you fail to maintain the academic requirements and should you fail to keep to the agreed upon terms and conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement that governs the Scholarship Award.
Can I change placement schools once I am a Scholar?
Upon acceptance of the Scholarship, you will not be able to change from one school to another.
