How to Apply

Interested applicants can apply for the Fellowship opportunity during their Grade 12 school year or during their first year of university. The Fellowship application is open to learners and students from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland. The Fellowship selection team aims to correctly select talented individuals from the Southern African region so that the Fellowship is awarded to individuals that are most able to leverage this opportunity. The Fellowship selection team specifically focuses on attracting eligible applicants using effective assessment tools and rigorous and reliable processes to make sure that eligible candidates are fairly assessed and that the correct decisions are made. Fellowship applicants need to fulfill the criteria indicated below.

General Selection Criteria

Fellowship Applicants need to be able to show a track record of leadership or being entrepreneurially minded. The Foundation’s framework to measure this as follows:

  • Achievement Excellence: The ongoing pursuit of excellence with tangible and specific focus on setting goals. A motivation to make a difference and leave a mark.
  • Intellectual Imagination: Demonstrated by an established record of intellectual achievement; an ability to see the unseen, challenge the status quo and suggest that things could be done differently.
  • Courageous Commitment: The courage and dedication to continue, realising that applying consistent commitment has a way of overcoming.
  • Spirit of Significance: A weight of personality that comes from living a life personified by passion and integrity.
  • Personal Initiative: A person who makes things happen and celebrates the satisfaction of bringing new things into being. Independent, proactive and self-starting

Apart from being entrepreneurially minded, there are a couple of mandatory academic requirements that applicants need to fulfil:

South Africa Grade 12 (2017 Applications are Closed)

Mandatory Requirements

  • Citizens of South Africa
  • Belief in the future of your country
  • An ambassador of the Foundation’s intended profile (refer to General Selection Criteria above)
  • Intention to study for a degree in Commerce, Science (excluding Medicine), Engineering, Law or Humanities (majoring in Politics, Philosophy, or Economics) degree at WITS, UJ, UCT, NMMU, Rhodes, UWC, Stellenbosch or UP
  • Level 5 in Pure Mathematics for Grade 11 results
  • Level 6 average for Grade 11 results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Completion of the National Benchmark Test by 30 September 2017
  • You cannot be older than 21 years of age in the year of your application

  • Minimum average of 65% for your 2016 mid-year (June) exam results

  • Indication of entrepreneurial flair and passion

  • Citizens of South Africa

  • Belief in the future of your country

  • Ambassador of the Foundation’s intended profile. In other words, demonstrating a Spirit of Significance, Intellectual Imagination, Achievement Excellence, Personal Initiative and Courageous Commitment

  • Studying towards a degree in Commerce, Science (excluding Medicine), Engineering, Law or Humanities (majoring in Politics, Philosophy OR Economics) at the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Johannesburg, University of Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Rhodes University, University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University, University of the Free State, University of Pretoria or TSiBA

  • Minimum of 65% average in 2016 year-end exam results and 65% average in 2017 mid-year exam results

  • Certified copies of academic/extra-curricular awards/recognition must be provided

  • Candidates must not be older than 23 years of age in 2017.

For learners currently in A/S, A Level, Grade 12 IEB, I/B or Equivalent the following applies to you:

  • Minimum C in Mathematics for Form 4 and minimum B average for Form 4 results
  • Minimum C in Mathematics for Form 5 and minimum B average for Form 5 results
  • Intention to study for a Commerce, Science (excluding medicine), Engineering, Law or Humanities (Majoring in Politics, Philosophy or Economics) degree at WITS, UJ, UCT, NMMU, Rhodes or UP

  • Successful applicants will be interviewed in July – August 2017
  • Before the interview you will write the National Benchmark Test
  • Successful interviewed candidates will attend a 3 day camp at the end of October 2017. Fellows are chosen after the camp(s).
